PURPOSE

In Detroit, we celebrate college application season by kicking off with #WhyApply in September and hosting Michigan College Month in October.

The purpose of Michigan College Month is to ensure all graduating seniors have the opportunity to apply to college. Michigan College Month can open the door for students by encouraging them to take the most significant steps toward pursuing

postsecondary education.

Our goal is to help all graduating high school seniors navigate the complex college admissions process and provide the opportunity to complete at least three applications that meet match, reach and safety qualifications.

HISTORY

The American College Application Campaign (ACAC) is a national effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students who pursue a postsecondary education.

The purpose is to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure each participating student submits at least one admission applications. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have considered applying to college.

The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) has adopted this national campaign, and DCAN supports Detroit high schools and community-based organizations with participating each October.

IMPACT

In 2022-2023  we had 1,086 Detroit seniors participate and complete a total of 3,445 college applications, an average of about 3.17 applications per student.
